Young People

For five years I was the school counsellor for two large schools in Surrey working with boys and girls from 8yrs old to young adults of 18yrs old.

I have worked with children and young people since 1997 when as a trainee counsellor, I developed a 'Drop in Service' for young people with the practice nurse and dietician at a GP surgery.

I started to work with children and young people privately as the referral system in the NHS was quite restrictive.

I have developed skills which enhance my work with children who do not have the vocabulary to say how they feel by using art forms, story telling and writing, the use of puppets and sand trays. I was inspired by and attended workshops ran by Anna Michele Hantler. I work with a person centred approach using cognitive behavior therapy and solution focused techniques, where appropriate.

I have attended training with Dudley School Counselling service and Strathclyde University 'Counselling In Secondary Schools' . As well as developing counselling skills with young people I have an awareness and understanding of child protection procedures and particular concerns of ethics and confidentiality which may arise with young people.

I hold an enhanced disclosure.

I have experience of working with children(from age 8)and young people in the following areas:

  • Abuse; emotional, physical and sexual
  • Anger and rage
  • Anxiety; separation anxiety
  • Bereavement
  • Compulsive behaviours
  • Depressed mood
  • Eating disorders; anorexia, bulemia and compulsive eating
